Tortuguero National Park holds a special, almost sacred, place in my heart. Nestled along Costa Rica’s northeastern Caribbean coast, this remarkable park is dedicated to the protection of diverse ecosystems and an incredible variety of wildlife. From the nesting sea turtles that give the park its name to elusive jaguars, playful monkeys, and gentle manatees, Tortuguero is a haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

Getting to Tortuguero is an adventure in itself. There are no roads leading directly to the park, so visitors must arrive by boat or small aircraft. My journey began with a tranquil boat ride through the park’s winding canals, where each turn revealed a more awe-inspiring corner of nature than the last. The dense tropical rainforest, the symphony of birds and insects, and the mirror-like water reflecting the lush canopy above create a mesmerizing experience that immediately transports you into the wild heart of Costa Rica.

Tortuguero’s trails offer an intimate glimpse into the park’s extraordinary biodiversity. One of our favorite hikes is El Jaguar Trail, where we were lucky enough to spot hawks, monkeys, and even the occasional tapir. Two of our favorite routes, Caño Harold and Caño Palma Trails, lead through serene, wide canals where the calm water allows for easy wildlife spotting. Here, we encountered turtles sunning themselves on fallen logs, caimans lurking just beneath the surface, and even an occasional sloth hanging from the treetops.

Beyond the Park: Discovering Barra del Colorado and Cerro Tortuguero

Tortuguero is just the beginning of an incredible journey through Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. Nearby, Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge offers even more opportunities for spotting exotic wildlife, while Cerro Tortuguero, the highest point in the region, provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and coastline.

Our hike up Cerro Tortuguero was nothing short of spectacular. The trail, though steep, was well worth the effort, leading us to a stunning viewpoint overlooking the park’s lush greenery and intricate waterways. Along the way, we encountered vibrant red poison dart frogs, playful white-faced capuchins, and the unmistakable call of the keel-billed toucan echoing through the trees.
